Boring United Reach Final
Stockholm, here they come!
Manchester United booked their place in the Europa League final on Thursday night thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 aggregate win over Celta Vigo .
Whereas it was Marcus Rashford who struck United's goal in the first leg in Spain, it was Marouane Fellaini who proved to be the hero in the second leg at Old Trafford, with the big Belgian's early header setting the stage for Jose Mourinho's side to tough it out and eventually see off their dogged Spanish opponents , who pulled one back late on amid chaotic scenes
And while United obviously deserve credit for making it through to the final - where they'll face Ajax in two weeks' time - you won't find many people outside of the club's fanbase who have been overly thrilled by their progress through the tournament.
In fact, let's be honest, it's been a bit dull.
And, should United end up winning a final which has two or fewer goals in 90 minutes, then they'll earn the crown of the most BORING Europa League winners in the past 11 years.
There have been 31 goals in United's 14 Europa League games this season at an average of 2.21 per game, a total which is lower than the number of goals in the matches played by all the winning sides in the competition stretching back to Sevilla in 2006.
Taking into account only the group stages and knockout stage matches (with some clubs playing less games due to dropping down from the Champions League) the full list looks like this.
But will United fans care if they end up lifting the trophy in Stockholm?
Not one little bit.
