Billiat Relishing Super Cup Clash Against TP Mazembe
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Khama Billiat says he is looking ahead to the CAF Super Cup game against DRC’s TP Mazembe on Saturday.
Sundowns, who won the Champions League last year, engage the Confederation Cup winners in a traditional Cup match between the winners of the two major continental knockout tournaments.
It is likely to be an explosive showdown considering the profile of these two teams on the continent and Billiat who came second in the CAF player of the year based in Africa award said Saturday’s match provides the Brazilians the chance to show exactly what they're made of.
“This is going to be a big game. Nothing can be bigger, at least at continental level,” said Billiat on Sundowns’ website.
"Games like this are the only way you can measure how big or good you are."
Five-time African champions TP Mazembe are the defending champions of this Cup which they have won on all the three occasions they have featured in it.
And Mamelodi Sundowns also want to win it for the first time and make history.
To show how serious they are about winning it, Billiat said the South African PSL champions started planning for this match immediately after winning the CAF Champions League.
"Once we had won the CAF Champions League, we knew we had to do planning for the Super Cup. We know what is coming. They know us and we know them.”
Besides the pride of being the best in Africa and the financial rewards involved in the Super Cup, the game will also be significant to Billiat considering TP Mazembe has four national team players that were at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Gabon— goalkeeper Matampi Vumi Ley, defenders Issama Mpeko Djo, Bope Bokadi Merveille and Bolingi Mpangi Jonathan.
Facing the DRC opponents could give the Warriors maestro a hint of what Zimbabwe should expect from the Leopards when they meet in the AFCON qualifiers which begin in June.
Zimbabwe were drawn in Group G where DRC are the top seeds in a group that also has Congo Brazzaville and Liberia.
