Billiat Changes Shirt Number
HIGH-flying Zimbabwe international Khama Billiat who has seen his stock rising since he moved from Ajax Cape Town to Sundowns a couple of seasons ago says Mamelodi Sundowns fans will have to wait until the end of the season to find out why he changed his jersey number for the 2016/17 season.
The 25-year-old Zimbabwe international who underlined his growing status after being named the best player in the ABSA Premiership for the 2015-16 season used to wear number number 20 on the back of his shirt but donned number 33 in Sundowns’ first match of the 2016/17 season in the MTN8 quarter-finals on Saturday.
In a memorable season, Billiat swept all the major individual awards including being voted Kick Off’s Footballer of the Season by the top-selling South African soccer magazine.
Speaking to Kickoff.com the former Aces Youth Academy player said a "special someone" is behind the move.
"Someone special asked me to change numbers and there's reasons why the person asked me to.
"And I respect [their request] that I can only reveal why the person asked me to do that at the end of the season,” said Billiat.
Billiat has also continued with his brilliant form in the CAF Champions League where he has inspired Sundowns to a semi-final place. The Sundowns talisman will, however, continue wearing the number 20 shirt in Downs' ongoing CAF Champions League campaign, as his registration number cannot change during through the competition.
Sundowns next play Zesco United of Zambia in the first leg of their semi-final clash on September 16, in Zambia and then play the return in Pretoria a week later.
