Akbay breaks another jinx
Dutchman Erol Akbay's target might be the championship at the end of the season, and along the way he is breaking every jinx that troubled Highlanders since they last won the title in 2006.
His first major breakthrough was beating Dynamos, a club that had troubled Highlanders for the last nine seasons with the last victory coming in the year that they last won the league title in 2006. On Sunday, Akbay guided Bosso to their first win over ZPC Kariba with a slender 1-0 victory courtesy of an Adrian Silla strike. Highlanders had not beaten ZPC Kariba in four meetings with the closest they got was a draw and three other matches going the Kariba way. On Sunday Bosso did not only break that record but also ended Kariba's eight match unbeaten run.
The Dutchman was however the first to admit that the win did not come on a silver plate. “Its three important points but it was a very difficult match. They played good football especially in the second half and they were unlucky not to have scored a goal. It’s also good that we continue to win against teams that always trouble us," said Akbay.
With the win, Highlanders stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches as they stretched their points on top of the log standings to 26. The resurgent giants have also scored in every game in the eleven matches played so far this season, as they surge towards their first league title in ten years.
Bosso last won the league under Methembe Ndlovu and since then they have been a pale shadow of themselves with Kelvin Kaindu coming close to rekindling that glory in 2012 and 2013.
It remains to be seen if Akbay will break another ten year jinx and win the 2016 season.
