After Charles Sibanda, Nobody Else

NO striker has won the Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year award since 2010 and the league sponsors Delta Beverages are worried about strikers’ impotence ahead of Friday night awards gala.

The 2017 Soccer Star of the Year will be crowned at a banquet in Harare on Friday with defenders Ocean Mushure and Kelvin Moyo tipped for the big one.

Caps United’s holding midfielder Devon Chafa and FC Platinum attacking linkman Rodwell Chinyengetere are also being tipped for the big one.

The last striker to be awarded was Charles Sibanda who won it in 2010 when he was still at Motor Action.

Sibanda now turns out for league champions FC Platinum.

“It becomes a cause for concern to see that our strikers are not really pushing for it,” Delta Beverages marketing executive Patricia Murambinda.

“Probably football has changed and strikers can no longer have the freedom to score as frequently as they did in the past, or is that goalkeepers and defenders have improved? I don’t know,” questioned Murambinda.

The 2017 Golden Boot winner Dominic Chungwa failed to breach the 20-goal mark after scoring 17 for Caps United.

The last local player to score more than 20 goals was Norman Maroto who banged 22 for Gunners in 2010.
