Abuse Resurfaces In Women Football?
THERE are fears that abuse of the girl child by their trusted male officials in the recently revived Zimbabwe Women Soccer League could have resurfaced following a leaked Whatsapp chat between a coach for a Bulawayo team and his player.
The team though is not part of the Super League but will be playing in the Bulawayo provincial league.
The leak comes barely a week after other officials from a Bulawayo based Super League side were seen at Barbourfields Stadium drinking beer with their female players, raising concerns that they could be more than just drinking beer especially when the teams go for away matches.
This happened during a league match between two Super League clubs Inline Academy and Street Set at Barbourfields outside grounds. The crew that was drinking beer was moving in a sleek car being driven by a men believed to be the owner of the team.
In the leaked whatsapp message communication which started at 9:42PM on March 27, the coach (name withheld) starts by sending a brief message saying “Twaaa,” and the player after eight minutes responds, “Coach how are you,”
Immediately after that the coach tells the player that he misses her and the conversation goes on with the coach asking some intimate questions although the player doesn’t seem to be interested in the conversation, judging by her responses.
She is then told to delete the message after she told the coach that her siblings have access to her phone.
Contacted for comment, the young player, while confirming the conversation, said her coach told her that it was his younger brother who had his phone.
“He said it was not him but his younger brother who was sending those messages to me and I had no option but to believe him,” said the player.
The coach also claimed the same thing arguing that he does not propose love to his players.
“My younger brother used my phone without my permission and proposed love to this girl, it was not me,” said the player.
Sources though said it was not the first time that such an incident involving the same coach has happened as he also tried it with a Hwange Ladies player and his conversation was recorded by a Burrow Jets player.
“I think we just need to have women running women football because a lot is happening that is not exposed. It’s not all men of-course who do these things as some are genuinely in there for the love of the game, it’s only a few misguided ones who must be chucked out because they will spoil the image of women football which is slowly rising,” said a source.
