222 For CUCSA Zone Six Games
Zimbabwe has named a 222-member squad for the upcoming Confederation of University College Sports Association Zone Six Games to be held in Bulawayo from August 1-6.
The tournament will feature teams from nine southern African countries, as Bulawayo continues to enjoy the benefits of hosting the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Youth Games that saw a number of sporting facilities being upgraded to international standards.
The countries include South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe squad comprises 177 athletes that will take part in eight disciplines, 14 coaches, 14 managers and a 13-member management team.
They are set to go into camp on July 27 at the United College of Education in Bulawayo to fine-tune their skills ahead of the games, according to Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union (ZTISU) secretary-general Olivarth Guvuriro.
The Zimbabwe squad consists of athletes from various tertiary institutions in the country, except for Lupane State University.
“All the nine countries have confirmed their participation and we are happy about that,” said Guvuriro.
Athletes will compete in netball, chess, basketball, karate, football, volleyball, tennis and athletics.
According to the Zimbabwe list, the women’s volleyball team is dominated by players from the University of Zimbabwe, while Midlands State University has 13 players in the football team, largely because they have a team playing in Division One of the Zifa Central Soccer League.
Hillside and the National University of Science and Technology contributed four and three athletes respectively in the women’s basketball squad, while MSU contributed six to the men’s basketball side.
Former 3 000m junior athletics national champion Brenda Banda, who is now at Hillside Teachers’ College, made it into the athletics team where she will compete in the 800M, 1 500m and 5 000m events.
