18 Years Later, Matongorere Back At Caps

EXACTLY 18 years after Nelson Matongorere was fired as coach from Caps United, following a barren 15-month period that stretched between October 1998 and January 2000, the gaffer is back at Makepekepe where he has taken up the technical adviser’s post.

Caps United coach Lloyd Chitembwe recommended Matongorere’s appointment after some “serious considerations.”

“He (Matongorere) brings in a wealth of experience in the group and we are all happy to have him in our set-up. Together we will be able to do something good,” Chitembwe said.

Matongorere is one of the most qualified coaches in the country with a UEFA B coaching certificate and is also a veteran instructor with the Confederation of African football.

The tall gaffer succeeded Steve Kwashi back in 1998 but was sacked by the Shepherd Bwanya-led executive for poor results in January 2000.

He is back at Makepekepe where he is expected to add more technical expertise to a team that is chasing a second league title in three years.

Caps United begun their 2018 preseason in Harare on Tuesday with a number of new faces in attendance.

Returnees Oscar Machapa, Chris Mverechena and Dominic Mukandi all took part in the opening training session.

Former How Mine keeper Munyaradzi Diya is also trying his luck.
